4.2.4 > 4.3 in-place upgrade on a NovaCustom Machine

Has anyone done an in place upgrade on Novacustom v56 or v54? Where there any issues? Just trying to get some info before I decide which way I want to upgrade

I have a NovaCustom V54 laptop and decided to instead do a fresh Qubes OS install. Mainly because it was a chance to force myself to setup Qubes just the way I like it after a bunch of trial and errors of messing with my Qubes when I first got this laptop. Now it’s super squeaky clean and organized!

If you decide to do a fresh install, I had zero issues with it – if you’re also running Coreboot+Heads, you’ll obviously need to redo your LUKS encryption passphrase, recommit/overwrite valid hashes, and redo the boot TOTP. But it’s easy - it just tells you to type in your USB key’s password and say yes or no on certain things and then to select what boot you want to select.

There should not be hardware related problem with the in place upgrade. But there could still be issues, it’s not really related to hardware in such case.

Thank you! I’m running coreboot+edk-II. Do you know of any difference in the install then? How did restoring from backup go?

Unrelated to the topic.

Thank you for the time and knowledge you put into this forum. It does not go unrecognized or unappreciated.

I updated my NitroPad v54 in-place with no issues. I’m running coreboot + EDK-II. I believe it is basically the same machine as the NovaCustom V54. I would just advise to monitor the upgrade as you’re doing it. I left it to have lunch and came back to a black screen and had to reboot and start over.

However since running R4.3 I’ve encountered this bug which, right now, is rendering my machine almost unusable: Unrecoverable GUI bug on R4.3 on NitroPad v54

Not sure about Coreboot+EDK II but I would assume it should be easier to work with compared to Coreboot+Heads.

Do you get a Grub menu when you boot up? If yes, then I assume the only thing you’ll need to do if you’re doing an in-place upgrade is to make sure you’re selecting the correct option since your LUKS passphrase hasn’t changed and EDK II doesn’t enforce measured boot, verified boot, or any of the Heads specific security modules,

That’s unfortunate and I’m sorry you’re dealing with that. Hope that you can figure it out soon.

It sounds similar to an issue I had with a multi monitor setup. Maybe there are some clues in here.

Yes. I’ve upgraded the V56 with coreboot+edk/uefi (not Heads) without any problems.

Appreciated. That is the same model I have.
