qvm-pool add -o dir_path=/mnt/test -o revisions_to_keep=1 test file

Yields the unhelpful:
permission denied for call b'admin.pool.Add+b'file' (b'dom0' → b'dom0') with payload of 35 bytes

Works for me. Do you maybe already have a pool called test? That’s yet another case where qvm-pool add will result in a such a crummy error *sigh*

However, the legacy file driver (as opposed to the modern file-reflink driver) shouldn’t be used anymore. It’s deprecated and may be removed in R4.2.

That bugfix indeed hasn’t been backported to R4.1 yet (@marmarek: it would be a clean cherry-pick). But its only change is to print a better error message on using a wrong driver name, e.g. misspelling file-reflink as file_reflink like in the ticket.
