Why am I missing all my icons? [SOLVED]

Well guys,

I just noticed something after so long and I only noticed this after I was doing the “Qubes Tweak tool” today as I really like it and whatever his name is who made this “I wish I could spell his name” to add more colors and icons… I only have the "naming of colors/names of what the “Qubes tool” did. Like arch, webcolors, gentoo, color names. BUT if I right click on my desktop and go to “applications” in my context menu, they are missing their icons too…WTF???

Upon researching our forum I found this and…
This did not help me…

How do I fix this, so that I have my icons back and will be able to use the “Qubes Tweak Tool”.
I did a test with the “Qubes Tweak Tool” by making a “TEST” domain and selecting what I wantedand didn’t get any icons, just the naming convention I use for the test.

I also just by chance think I did something wrong, I reran the “Qubes Tweak Tool” and everything “regenerated” just find as it stated that when doing it…

sudo make all

Thanks guys…

Hi.

So, do you mean that the labels are present and only the icons are missing? And you only created custom labels?

In this case, you could easily regenerate (just) the icons, preserving the existing labels and their uses.

p.s.: Do this

qubes-label-tt list

And take note of the (existing) labels and their color codes. Then:

qubes-label-tt create Label ColorCode

It will inform you that the label already exists and you could regenerate the icons.

Hi there, yep that’s you I am talking about…

Well my friend I have a deeper problem here then your “Qubes Tweak Tool”. But it was installing your Tool that pointed this out to me.

You see I never use my context menu, mouse “right click”, and it was after installing your tool that I started looking around as I only have the words with no icons. When I did a test with build…{Dom0] Create new qube
I chose…“Lime” even though it is missing the icon
{Dom0] Create new qube… my-new-qube
I am missing the “icon” which should be lime color cube icon, it just shows the name…It has all the other icons on the right side that are lime color AND when I launch them the borders are lime…

Also when I “mouse” right click" I get my right click menu, I go to “applications” and the pane pops out. I only have words and NO ICONS anywhere…

I really wish I could take “screen shots” but the dam windows keep closing…

This appears to be a xfce4 issue and I am trying to research it and getting no where

If you are willing to take (and share) a screenshot, you could set a delay in xfce4-screenshooter:

What is the output of this command in dom0:

gtk-update-icon-cache ~/.local/share/icons/hicolor/

I get after running cmd in Dom0…

No theme index file

To be correct…

gtk-update-icon-cache: No theme index file

Ok. Do this:

sudo gtk-update-icon-cache /usr/share/icons/hicolor/ --force
gtk-update-icon-cache ~/.local/share/icons/hicolor/ --force -t

Pay attention that the 2nd command does not have sudo

Also in Desktop Settings > Icons > Icon Type setting assure that it is set to File/Launcher icons and it is not set to None

DId the first cmd…

sudo gtk-update-icon-cache /usr/share/icons/hicolor/ --force

I get return statement…

gtk-update-icon-cache: Cache file created successfully

I do second cmd…

gtk-update-icon-cache ~/.local/share/icons/hicolor/ --force -t

I get return statement…

gtk-update-icon-cache:Failed to open file /home/username/.local/share/icons/hicolor/.icon-theme.cache : No such file or directory

Also now my “Qube” icon (where you can see VM’s up and running, like sys-firewall,sys-net) up in the taskbar is opening & closing itself, causing my taskbar to bounce. Its very annoying

Is this a service crashing for the “Qubes” systray icon?

ok I now have all my icons on my mouse “right” click, everything is there. I still do not have anything from “Qubes” Tweak tool. only words, no icons, even when I
{Dom0] Create new qube
I chose…“Lime” even though it is missing the icon
{Dom0] Create new qube… my-new-qube
I am missing the “icon” which should be lime color cube icon, it just shows the name…It has all the other icons on the right side that are lime color AND when I launch them the borders are lime…

This shows that the local tweak tool icon directory and local icons were either:

  1. was never created
  2. was deleted? Did you delete files in your home directory?

To regenerate the icons, copy the Tweak Tools (entire repo) to dom0, extract it and go to icons directory, then:

make all

Well my friend something isn’t going as planned…look please

But I still get this, as you see I ran the “Tweak Tool”…

ScreenShot_5, we have my mouse “right” click working now.

I have to do… sudo make all
inorder to get the “Tweak tool” to work…

Ah. Now that it makes sense. Tweak Tool does not need sudo. It is designed to work entirely in user space, saving all icons in user home directory. If it is run via sudo, it will create the icons in /root directory (which of course your user account does not have access to).

And I see you did not install the main program (qubes-label-tt) in your home directory (~/bin). That is why you get No such file or directory error message.

Please do this before regenerating icons:

  1. Go to qubes-label-tt directory of repository and run make install (without sudo).
  2. Then go to icons directory and run make all

BTW, all of this is my fault. Usually users expect make install to be with sudo (sudo make install). And I have to prepare a nice package for all of this.
