What is the best device to install Qubes?
Hello everyone. I had installed Qubes on a USB flash drive, but recently I got an error and it has become unusable. After that, I learned on this forum that USB memory is not the best choice. But I don’t know any other options. I don’t want my laptop to be installed on Quebes. Laptops cost a lot. I’ve also heard that an SD card is good. But I would like more device choice information.
The best storage to install Qubes is a nvme drive, then a ssd sata drive, then a hard drive, then an usb memory stick, then an sd card.
Two solutions in-between:
- A usb SSD disk. I have some from Crucial/Micron.
- A small usb enclosure where you can put an nvme drive.
The enclosures seem a bit bigger than the dedicated usb-ssd, but I think they give the useful possibility to take out the disk if the usb interface gets damaged. I plan to try one sometime.
One issue installing Qubes OS on any kind of storage connected to USB is the inability to use the sys-usb service that removes USB from dom0 and allows to assign each connected device to a given qube when needed.
Another solution would be to buy a cheap computer for Qubes OS.
I would recommend finding a motherboard compatible to Heads.
Thank you to everyone. I’ve received a wide range of advice, so I’ll use it as a reference. it was very helpful.
Thank you for your kindness .
