What happens during downloading template?

Hello everyone.

I have a question: during downloading any template, why it is automatically started once downloaded and shut down? @deeplow @marmarek ?

I would later elaborate why I’m asking, but for now I wouldn’t want to potentially poison the point and the discussion itself.

Sorry to ping you guys this way, but I don’t want someone having no clear and straightforward answer hopefully pointing me to the resource that confirms it, to troll and/or hijack the topic.

Thanks in advance

dom0 calls the template’s qubes.PostInstall qrexec service, which runs a couple of scripts in /etc/qubes/post-install.d/ in the template all calling back to dom0 to inform it of available applications and features.

Hey, thanks! That’s a proper answer! Since I’m not tech savvy although I can somewhat read python, this means that the template is started to communicate exclusively with dom0? Sorry if my questions seem banal.

Yeah exactly, it’s so that dom0 can ask the template what software is installed in it.

I don’t think they are!

Thanks for confirming and clarifying. The idea was to be as anonymous as possible using Qubes. So the weakest link in this was downloading template (dom0’s netVM is sys-whonix) and not knowing if it’s contacting outside world via clear net in the process.

Concise, clear answers.
