HI! I am new to Qubes OS and in general in the Linux world I am not an expert.
The other day after starting my Qubes system on an external SSD, after entering the password for disk encryption, I get the message “warning: USB in dom0 is not restricted.
It has always worked perfectly and the last time I used it I did not play with dom0 and I did not do anything unusual in general.
The only thing I did was insert a tp-link USB dongle before starting. I read that the system freezes in the case of unrecognized USB, but even when removed it continues to give me the same problem.
I tried to remove in “edit selection” rhgb quiet trying with the suggested options like: “ rd.cubes.hide_all_usb”, “usbcore.autorizzed_default=0” and “plymouth.enable=0” but the machine keeps crashing and I can’t find a solution
(not knowing the operating system well, I’m pretty sure I didn’t install sys-usb)
Uh yes sorry I didn’t notice, I typed wrong writing the post. but during the attempts I carefully checked for any syntax errors.
Thank you infinitely for your help. as soon as I can I will study the documentation well and try to understand. I will update on the post any developments.
owning a laptop I don’t need peripherals (even if I could try to connect my wireless ones from the workstation), for this reason I probably never encountered problems until the arrival of the wi-fi dongle (I don’t think it’s the case but with disks and flash drives I never had problems).
do you still recommend that I associate them with a USB controller?
well I don’t think a wifi dongle should cause any problems… IDK why it doesn’t boot with it you should probably try different kernel versions (there are currently some unbootable (e.g nvidea) dom0 kernels)
And only bind a usb controller to dom0 if dom0 needs access to the peripherals (keyboard mouse etc…) Connecting a wifi dongle is a bad idea use a usb/net-qube for that.
I tried to run previous kernel versions, also trying to change the boot settings but I got the same results.
I made some attempts on grub at the boot menu, to try to access doom zero and look for the problem, but I have little knowledge about it and I don’t know where to bang my head.
I will definitely need to install my peripherals, the keyboard even if wireless must be wired, while for the mouse I will try to get a wired one (I know that it can also be connected via bluetooth but I don’t know how much it could cause problems in addition to affecting the security of my system)
Unable to find the problem and access dom0 in any way, I decided to reinstall the system, with a little more awareness of how USB drives work.
Having my archive disconnected from the system one I can at least recover my data.
This time I inserted the disk inside my laptop, so I at least avoid the hassles of having it on an external drive, like the boot file that decides to delete itself .
I thank you infinitely for your help, once installed I will try to install the kernel you suggested, and do some tests to see how it responds.
Now I’m trying to understand how convenient it is to install sys-usb. I could have big problems in being able to use my basic peripherals (mouse and keyboard?).
Even if I’m curious to understand how it works I feel like I’m about to immerse myself in a world of other problems
