Using unknown VPN service as a layer, what are the risks?

I have upcoming trip to highly censored country which blocks access to outside world through various ways, including DPI. I’ve had extensive issues on my last visit and want to be prepared this time. I need to be able to connect to outside world for work, so it’s somewhat important to me.

My regular VPN service (proton) and wireguard (in my vps) both don’t work. In very rare occasions it would connect to protomvpn. AmneziaWG worked on smartphone for some time, but no longer works as well. I wasn’t able to setup AmneziaWG on my computer at all after many many attempts.

I’m getting some recommendations from friends of friends of what they are using, and getting some unknown to me VPN services which they says that works. I’ve got some trust issues with such VPN services, but thinking, what if I use it as extra VPN layer to connect to my regular VPN servers. Say for example:

ISP->RandomVPNService-WG(VPS)->internet or

ISP->RandomVPNService->PtotonVPN->internet

Am I risking anything here? And what are my other options?

I’d try webtunnel bridges on Tor network.

Nevertheless it might be difficult especially in Russia because censors there started whitelisting IPs and / or domain names and block everything else.

Thank you. That’s actually the country in question. To my understanding and research, the whitelisting method is being used mostly for mobile operators, when landline internet uses blacklist method instead. I did have better success with landline mostly. Mobile internet was completely useless. But that’s fine to me, if I could make any connection work.
I was able to setup AmneziaVPN and make it work in rented VPS last night. I hope in will be able to connect when time comes. It’s little confusing, but at least it works while I’m outside of censor country.
I was also thinking to setup v2ray / x2ray. But I see that AmneziaVPN client has such option to select. Does it mean I don’t have to setup v2ray cure separately and it will have same result?

As for my original question, if all this don’t work, but I find working paid VPN and use it as additional layer before I connect to my VPS or protonvpn, will they actually logs of what I’m actually doing and where I’m going? They’ll only see the ip of the next leg, correct? I believe I would be able to find some working VPN over there, I just won’t trust it and I’m wondering if I take any risks about it.

When landline connections are being censored by blacklisting a Tor webtunnel bridge is still an option. You might need to try several of them.

It might be a good idea to ask for help directly at the Tor forum:

In QubesOS there is sys-whonix that can be used for all connection. On android there is tor-vpn beta.
