Lenovo finally announced the P16 Gen 3, more details here. What I find sad is that it looks like integrated graphics is no longer an option. On the Lenovo Australia website you can already preorder it and they only offer discrete graphics. That means it would need Nvidia drivers in dom0.
I waited years for this model, because I’m worried about the Intel CPU 13th and 14th generation degradation issues. Now I’m wondering if I should buy the Gen 2 with a 14th generation CPU and live with the risk of degradation, buy the Gen 3 and live with proprietary drivers or consider something else entirely.
I don’t have any question, just wanted to share my disappointment and see if anyone else is in the same boat.
The Intel Core Ultra processors indeed have integrated Arc GPU.
Otherwise it will not be possible to display even BIOS or EFI settings, because at that point in time, the discrete NVIDIA GPU is not active.
It exists also some systems with such a processor, for example
Yes, my point is, you cannot order it without an additional discrete GPU. That usually means they solder the external display output to the discrete GPU, so you won’t be able to use an external monitor without Nvidia drivers in dom0.
???
Why not? The integrated GPU will be connected to the display also. The only point is, that you maybe cannot use the NVIDIA display with Qubes OS.
Otherwise, you don’t have any display on BIOS/EFI, because at this point in time, no NVIDIA display is initialized. This makes no sense.
The integrated GPU is always there and can be used, the only point is, that you have lesser graphic acceleration in comparision to the NVIDIA discrete GPU.
I was not writing/spoken about HDMI.
Nevertheless, the display of the Notebook works out of the box without HDMI.
Only the HDMI is fixed to the discrete GPU.
And Lenovo offers as additional connector a thunderbolt-to-displayport adapter, that can be used for external monitors with the integrated GPU.
