Suddenly very slow performance - suspect CPU throttling

Hi all,

All of a sudden my qubes laptop is very slow. I’m not sure if it coincided with an update or something else, but I have a suspicion that my CPUs are stuck at the lowest frequency. How do I check this in xen? I tried xenpm get-cpufreq-averages and it shows the lowest speed but I read somewhere that this might not be accurate in dom0. I’m running 4.2 on a framework 13 laptop with 13th gen Intel i7 CPU.

Thanks!

Hi

Could you try to quantify how it’s slow?

What is slow exactly? Is dom0 snappy but not the qubes, are the qubes slow to start but ok to use, always slow…?

Everything feels slow. Slow to boot. Slow for appvms to start. And using appvms is slow. It’s a big difference, not a small one.

In case it’s possibly relevant, I did accidentally leave my laptop running in a closed bag for several hours and it was very hot when I took it out…

Not sure, but I think it’s possible that the thermal paste got cooked and it’s now dried and leaving your CPU too hot to reach higher frequencies.

This may be a lead if you figure no issue on Qubes OS side. A quick check could be to run a live usb / live cd and monitor the CPU frequency there and also check if the system is running slow.

Interesting… I booted into windows off a USB key and it seemed fast. Now I booted back into qubes and qubes is fast again. I run xenpm get-cpufreq-average and I’m seeing higher numbers (not everything stuck at lowest freq.)

Not exactly sure what happened here but it seems fixed and I’ll report back if I figure out more. Thanks for the help.
