Hello, I have this issue for the 2nd time. I’ve updated dom0 and reloaded my pc and now I see this strange “please enter passhrase” window, and after I enter my passphrase I see only blinking cursor in upper left corner.
It’s not loading into login window or anything at all.
For the 1st time it’s happened I thought I’ve reloaded the pc while the dom0’s update was in the process and something has gone wrong. I’ve tried a lot of methods from google and gpt, but nothing worked, then I’ve just tried to manually backup my qubes and settings (I didn’t have a backup), but when I restored it, it broke my sys-usb (or something, I don’t know). So, I’ve decided to backup on external drive every time I want to update or just shut down the pc.
edit the GRUB menu (hit e) and remove quiet from the kernel line. Then press F10 or Ctrl-x to boot with the verbose output … and share the final messages you get.
Actually I don’t see any “quiet” option in the grub editor. I’ve tried to load into text based mode (with option 3) and it worked, I’ve logged in, so I guess the problem with the gpu?
I’m not sure what is kernel and what is GRUB. Like when I load into Qubes’ drive I have menu with 2 options: simple boot and with advanced options where I can choose version of kernel. I’m selecting the first one (simple) and click edit. I’ve also tried to boot using all kernel versions from advanced options.
The first step, will be to try and edit the GRUB menu – that’s the “which kernel version would you like to boot?” – and instead of just use the configured options, hit e to edit and use the arrow keys to find the line with quiet and remove quiet. Then hit F10 (or Ctrl-x) and watch the boot process.
Once you know how to edit kernel options, search this forum for “4070” and/or “rtx” and read some of the “black screen at boot” (or similar) topics - I don’t have you hardware, so I don’t have “the solution to solve it” … but something like modeset could be key to solve your problem.
I don’t have any experience with RTX4070 or RX580 - so I can’t predict how they will work. :-/
I believe you should be able to get the RTX 4070 working with some boot options - but you’ll have to do the experiments/verification of the suggestions/recommendation from other topics on this forum.
Seems I had a similar problem after the update too!
For now, I am able to just about boot in to an older laptop. But something with the latest dom0 update has definitely messed up certain hardware it seems.
I have:
motherboard - Gigabyte b550 DS3H
CPU - Ryzen 7 5800X
RAM - 64gb
GPU - RTX 4070 Super
SSD - 120gb Kingston
It seems my motherboard and other things should work fine, but the problem in GPU, so I asked this question to Gemini. It said that I can buy some AMD gpu, because it has default support of drivers. I’m thinking to buy one used radeon card. Something like RX 550 \ 570 \ 580. They all are like $50.
Buying a cheap AMD card that supports the resolution and output of your screen(s) is the best fix. Nvidia support isn’t really good on Linux except when installing there drivers, but it’s not really automated on qubes os so it’s quite painful to go through.
I had same problem, I fixed it with a new GPU from AMD and it worked a lot better.
