So I wanted to get a Kail linux qube setup, and I installed it as a standalone qube fine but I’m a bit lost on the integration with Qubes OS, a lot of the information online is quite dated going back to mostly r4.2 not much on 4.3 most people seem to say to convert a template into a kail qube rather than install and setup one from scratch.
That is the best advice.
Qubes packages are not guaranteed to work when installed in to stock
HVMs. Cloning a template, or creating a standalone from a template will
give you Qubes integration from the start.

Yes, but that means you’re always going to be limited to 3 Distros Debian, Fedora, whonix, and some other templates are in the Qubes OS template manager.
Not at all. Arch was developed because it was wanted. Others, like
Alpine, are being developed for the same reason. It is possible to
develop (in most cases) packages that can be used to build new templates
that are integrated with Qubes. But someone has to put the work in.
As for derivates like Kali, it’s easy to build packaged templates for
them - at https://qubes.3isec.org/ I offer a number of prepackaged
templates - all the derivatives are intergrated: some are not.

It doesn’t sound like the greatest long term solution, but if you can build templates how can I do that that way I’m not constrained to what templates are available online.
