Should I Reboot App-qubes after Net-qube Update?

I’ve looked around, but can’t seem to find an answer to my question.

I’ve been a Qubes user for a while now, but I’ve never known the answer to this question

If I update the Template on which a net- and firewall-qube are based, and then reboot them, how does that affect the rest of the system if I don’t reboot the App-qubes using the net/firewall qubes?

Especially if I’m using sys-whonix? In other words, if the Whonix Gateway Template is updated, and therefore wants to reboot sys-whonix, can I leave anon-whonix (or whonix-dvm) running without issue? Or if the net-qube is rebooted while sys-whonix is running, is that okay?

Or should I reboot everything with every update? (I get that may be the ‘best’ option, but I guess my question is: Is it necessary?)

The qubes affected by the update and requiring the restart are indicated in the Qubes Update tool. There is no need to update the unaffected qubes. Why do you think you would need it?

If no other qubes are based on this Template, you do not need to restart those.

I’m not an expert, but again there is a reason to have “update is needed” icons in Qube Manager. Qubes without those icons are fine.

@fsflover

I guess I didn’t specify well enough lol

I never intended to ask about unaffected qubes.

Okay:

If I’m using anon-whonix, and Whonix Gateway Template is updated:

Do I have to restart sys-whonix? And if I do restart sys-whonix, do I have to restart anon-whonix?

If I’m using anon-whonix, and therefore also using sys-whonix, and sys-net and sys-firewall are restarted:

Do I have to restart sys-whonix as well? In other words, clearly sys-whonix’s connection will be interrupted due to sys-net and sys-firewall restarting. Is it okay to leave it alone, or should I restart it (sys-whonix)? And if I do, should I then restart anon-whonix, since its connection will also have been interrupted?

In all cases, you should restart the qubes which
– are suggested for restarting in Qubes OS Update tool at the last step and
– have icon “The qube must be restarted…” in Qube Manager.

You should do it to apply the updates. And there’s and icon indicating that.

No, and there are no icons indicating that.

No, and it’s not indicated.

Yes, it will be. It’s fine.

Thank you for your response.

But you admitted you weren’t an expert on the topic.

I’m not really an expert but rebooting a netvm used by sys-whonix will give the same result as temporarily disconnecting from the internet, Tor should really be able to cope with a 20 seconds disconnection. At worse, you may just have to rebuild a circuit to get Tor working again.
