Rtw89 RTL8852AE issues with latest kernel

Has anyone got this chipset/pci card and had issues? After updating the Debian template which subsequently updated the kernel my wifi stopped working and I couldn’t figure out why. After much digging it threw some firmware errors (-12) I decided to just try see if it was a kernel issue since it worked fine when I first installed QubesOS (recently). I switched sys-net from using 7.0.9-1 to 6.18.31-1 and it worked fine. Id prefer it if I could update the kernel and still have wifi incase there is any security patches etc included in the later kernel. Anyone can weigh in on this? Oh and PS sorry if this is in the wrong section.

Here is my dmesg btw - failed to alloc Rx ring 1 failed to alloc dma Rx rings failed to alloc pci trex rings failed to set up pci resource and the same probe with driver failed with error - 12

Pps. Just realized I remembered trying to install qubes with the latest kernel due to some boot issues on my hardware, so I guess it’s not wise for stability reasons. I assume the lower kernel version is the lts non latest kernel version of qubes?

Hi @A7H

The “failed to alloc DMA RX rings” message sounds a little bit like this section of the docs:

Does it help if you increase the value of “swiotlb” in the kernel command line parameters for sys-net, like that item suggests?

(Warning: I’m not an expert on this stuff… it is only that I remember reading that page yesterday! I have also read the linux kernel doc about swiotlb and I understood almost none of it! )

Oh interesting I will give it a go and see if it works on the latest kernel at some point later and report back if that solves it, thanks for helping.

It is very common for Linux in general that some drivers and their relationship to the exact same piece of hardware behave differently when updating kernels and these issue solves over time often. It helps to use the kernel that works and there is a chance that the next update to a later version will make it stable again and your hardware will work good again with the RTW89, and then you can use the latest again. Till that time i would just use the previous kernel that worked.

This is also a good strategy…

Yeah im just going to keep sys-net on the stable kernel for now been testing it for a few days and no issues anymore.
