Hello!
I am new to Qubes and I’m trying to set up a working environnment to my liking. I am aware of the hardware restrictions of the OS so I think that I have found an uncompatible set-up that seems to work but is instable when used. If this post is in the wrong category, I’ll happely move it somewhere else.
I am able to boot, manage qubes, and thinker, until the point where the whole computer stops working.
This happens: keyboard/mouse stops working and the monitor starts flickering like crazy. If you look closely, the whole environnement is shifted to the right.
This started happening on the second time I used the computer for a long time (more than 2h). I was trying to set up a VPN using Mullvad, but had 4 crashes.
- The first time when using the Tor network for the first time (Whonix default install)
- The second time when clicking on the .onion prompt of the Tor browser. This led me to think that it was Whonix related, so I updated the Qubes using the built-in updating tool.
- The third time when scrolling on the desktop environnement to change desktops.
- The fourth time when looking and scrolling in the Qubes Manager.
Frustrated, I went to bed lmao. Here are the things that I did before the first crash:
- Created a Standalone Qube to only remote into my Windows 11 PC. I was gonna use that as a specific Windows Qube for Windows applications.
- Opened the Tor browser for the first time using the workstation dvm default.
- Created a sys-net-mullvadVPN Qube Template with the intention of using it as my secured internet access.
Here is the specs of the computer. It is a PC. I know that Qubes is mostly for Laptops but it was laying around and I told myself “why not, it could be fun”.
- Intel Core i5-7500 3.40GHz (4 cores)
- 16GB of RAM DDR4 - 2400MHz
- Intel HD Graphics (integrated)
- 256GB of SSD memory
- DVD player (unused)
If anyone is able to help me troubleshoot, I would be deepely grateful since this OS sounds like a lot of fun to work with! I was using Proxmox before but didn’t like the idea of having no desktop environnement anymore, so this is an upgrade regarding my needs.
