[qubes-users] Please help test kernel 5.4 in anticipation of Qubes 4.0.4-rc2

Hi all,

Based on the feedback we've received for Qubes 4.0.4-rc1, we've decided to make one additional change for 4.0.4, namely updating the kernel to at least 5.4. This means that we'll need a second release candidate before the stable release of 4.0.4. [1]

The official announcement for 4.0.4-rc2 will come soon. This is just an informal request for anyone willing to help test kernel 5.4 on Qubes 4.0 to do so and report any problems. [2] The package is already available in current-testing. [3] Thank you!

Hi,

I have some problems after just booting. There is an error at dom0 and a
some VM's fail to start (others run fine).

(Attachment vm.txt is missing)

(Attachment dom0.txt is missing)

The VMs which failed were running PV mode, switching to PVH fixed them.

Hi,

I tried to install, but I think it doesn't install because I already
installed kernel-latest (I need it for my ethernet card):

[xxx@dom0 ~]$ sudo qubes-dom0-update --enablerepo=qubes-dom0-current-testing
kernel

Try adding `--action=update` option.

This seems to be:

So, it is related to the Linux kernel version, not really Xen version.

Thanks for the help. Note that the action is upgrade (not update).

I switched for dom0 and most of TemplateVMs, AppVMs and DisposableVMs. I checked for the follow OSes : debian-10, debian-10-minimal, fedora-32 and whonix.

I detected neither issues, all is working well. I'll continue to test with my daily usage and report again in 2 days with more tests.

For users who want to test, the complete command is:

[xxx@dom0 ~]$ sudo qubes-dom0-update --action=upgrade --enablerepo=qubes-dom0-current-testing kernel kernel-qubes-vm

Thanks a lot for this 5.4.78 kernel, it will be a great help for supporting more recent hardware by default.

I experienced regular complete freezes of xen (after 5-30 minues xen
would be dead) -- I had to downgrade the xen kernel back to 4.19.155 -
to be able to write this mail. HCL report attached. Bernhard

Qubes-HCL-Dell_Inc_-Latitude_7390-20201129-212036.yml (793 Bytes)

So a week later, I didn't detect issues with this new 5.4 kernel. But previously I was already using an 5.8 kernel (kernel-latest).

One user dectected an issue, see the feedback from haaber, another user with an already known problem (donoban, issue #6052).

**Other users, please test this new kernel and give more feedbacks!**

Ludovic

I installed the updates from security-testing to fix QSB-063. I was still running kernel 4.19.x, but instead of the fixed 4.19 version, the fixed 5.4 version was installed. It has been running a few days now and I have not noticed any issues.(Sandy Bridge i5 notebook.)
