Qubes OS froze twice

I am re-posting this because my original post in “Help, I think I’ve been hacked” garnered only 7 views and I see a post, created after mine, unrelated to QubesOS (possibly by a troll) has more views.

I have a @novacustom NV41PZ laptop. I don’t have wifi/bluetooth chip in the laptop. I connect to internet using ethernet cable.

The laptop became unresponsive twice now. The first time when I was creating podman containers and was pulling packages to create the containers. Second time when I was running qubes-update-gui. Both times, the laptop became responsive after I disconnected the laptop from internet by removing the ethernet cable. There was some electronic noise (like when you start playing a cd or dvd) after I disconnect the ethernet cable and before the laptop unfroze.

I ran journalctl in dom0 and did not see any error message when the laptop was unresponsive. I do see a frequent core dump from xss-lock process which might be unrelated.

Below are the logs from the update process during which the laptop froze. I disconnected the ethernet cable somewhere in the middle of the process. Notice the big break after 14:02:57. Usually the update process completes immediately after it prints the summary messages. This time the update process ran for 90+ seconds before printing the message Remove /run/qubes-update/

Has anyone encountered similar issues? Where should I look to find the root cause of this issue?

I also had (have) freezes on R4.2 on highly compatible laptop. The journalctl does not show anything reasonable to me, too.

@red-pepper-pesto : There is not much information here.

It sounds like you are describing two lockups during heavy use of your network interface, but they occur only rarely.

If you think that sounds correct, then you could:

  • Test by doing other network-heavy activities
  • Verify versions of hardware, firmware, drivers
  • Check on the HCL
  • Maybe try updates to some or all of them
