Qubes 4.1 rc2 freezing

I’ve recently installed Qubes 4.1 rc2 on my system (4.0 wouldnt install from usb, just black screen after short bit of linux boot text)

First started happening when watching a movie with VLC (which runs smoother than the standard video player, but will display black with audio if it try maximize). But now freezing when doing all kinda of general dom0 actions, even copying files between VMs. Tried rebooting. This happened with fedora 34 vm & debian vm. Keeps happening. I think its Xen, not the vm.

How do i go about finding the cause? (new to linux/qubes)

System specs:
Ryzen 2700x
32gb ram
Asus TUF x470
NVIDIA GTX 660 ti

My screen is constantly flickering now (stops after reboot, but has happened multiple times now). I was trying to check if my CPU is over heating, but sensors command doesnt give me any CPU data

sorry but what you linked doesnt seem to give me any command to run?
in dom0 tired

sudo dnf install i3status

“error: unable to find a match”
I’ve had to HARD SHUTDOWN my pc several times tonight. Completely freezes, trying to find out the cause… would like to monitor core temps. The Qube Manager pause symbol was glitching all over the screen a couple of times before freezing, like 100 pause symbols all over the screen.

Which logs will help identify whats causing the freezing? Need commands please.

Did you try sensors and adding XFCE “Sensor Plugin”?

journalctl should show something I think.

This seems to be releated to Flickering screen after 4.1 update, which might be connected to using Nvidia graphics.

Thanks i found LOADS of errors (this is a small snippet)

3 more freezes this morning. HARD SHUTDOWN required.
Audio still plays, but video frozen, mouse and keyboard unresponsive

flickering stopped after reboot, though has reoccureed a couple of times.

This is what seems to happen before freezing

From googling “nouveau kernel error” it does appear to have something to do with nvidea.

“The nouveau project aims to build high-quality, free/libre software drivers for nVidia cards.”

I found this. Looks to be the same bug possibly
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-nouveau/-/issues/454

what can we do?

I figguered out how to add the plug in and found the CPU temps options. Its under "k10temp-c3" and description is “pci adapter” which confused me at first.
Tctl is 52
& Tdie 42
so not a temp problem.

I’m having the same issue. Do or anyone else know why and how to get it working?

UPDATE:
I decided to put my GTX 1080ti from my VR rig into my Qubes PC. No more freezing. So it would seem that nouveau bug doesnt effect newer Nvidia cards.

I read that a USB over 8gb can cause this problem. There are also some other config file changes you can make
see this page

The solution posted by @kommuni might help - see Flickering screen after 4.1 update

yep 2 freezes in the last day, after long stretch with none, but many in previous weeks, I awake system is frozen here are what is in red in journalctl -r FWIW:

last entry seems to be a cronjob ? but there IS a huge section earlier all in red, (I’m just making wild guesses what my Award UEFI is supposed to be, sure wish some expert, might sketch out how the UEFI is best configured even IF not a perfect match to Every UEFI, I boosted my fan speeds back to performance, but they’ve been find on ‘standard’, )(sensors plugin though says 36C Only, so ) at present I do have one appvm that won’t start on repeated reboots on 1st attempt , just says check qrexec.log ; maybe this time I won’t start it on the 2nd attempt…

*addendum: just noticed this HUGE section of core dumps is repeated 12 times in the last 2 days , sigh
