Qubes 4.3.0 installed from scratch a while back, has just started demanding a username and password to modify any settings in the Qubes Menu - vm - Print Settings. I have always been able to navigate to Print Settings in a vm, with my Brother printer attached to the vm without any username/pwd, accept and the changes then worked. I have tried using the username/pwd for my only logged in user and it is being rejected as not being valid. From within LibreOffice however I can make print settings changes without a problem. But not directly from the Qubes Print Settings feature. In Firefox although I cannot directly change settings from Print in the menu, clicking on “Print using the system dialog” opens a submenu, from which I can modify print settings. In Vivaldi I can also change settings directly from the print menu. It looks to me like I might now have some kind of permissions glitch in my Print Settings. Any ideas please?
Possibly I missed something information-wise in describing my print settings problem. There has been no response as of yet. I will try rewording the problem. For some time now I have been unable to make changes to print settings in my printer template, due to suddenly being asked for a username and password authentication to modify print settings. This was never the case previously. I have tried my Qubes username and password and have also tried root with the same password, but these have been rejected. No idea, what username and password are being asked for. I can attach my Brother printer to vm’s using this printer template and print. But I cannot change any settings via the print settings feature of any vm or the template itself. I can make changes though through a browser by using the ‘system dialog’, although this doesn’t give me full control of all print settings. I’m hesitant to just dump my template and make a new one, since the initial Brother setup is a bit time consuming. I suspect this might be a cups related problem with permissions, but I have no idea, where to start looking for the snag.
I had a similar issue a few weeks back with a samsung printer. In the end I just ran
sudo system-config-printer
and that worked.
Interestingly though (and i cannot now remember what qubes version i was using) I had an Epson r800 printer and that worked perfectly without using sudo, but I am not sure if it was the fact that i changed the printer or some other settings changed in the debian vm after an update.
I do not know for this case, but many “system” things depend on passwordless sudo.
Can you open a regular terminal in your printer qube, and run sudo ls with no asking for password?
Maybe the passwordless function is disabled or not installed, like when a plain minimal template is used. Quick test is to switch (temporarily) to a full template. Fedora is probably best.
Just an idea… hope it can help.
Thanks friends. Out of the house today. Will try your suggestions later and report back.
Sorry for the delay. Sudo system-config-printer did the trick. Thanks. I had used that command to initially set up the printer some ages ago. Don’t know why Qubes seemed to ‘lose’ my config. All is working fine now. cheers
