Prevent Qubes OS Update from launching at login

Is there any way to prevent the Qubes OS Update window from launching at every login? I’m sure the idea behind it is to encourage keeping TemplateVMs up to date, which I do. But it seems unnecessary to launch it at every login and doesn’t seem to be connected to launching the background service (which /etc/xdg/autostart/qui-updates.desktop seems to do).

I searched through the Global configs and dom0’s files (sudo find / | grep autostart | grep update) looking for anything that would trigger the qubes-update-gui but couldn’t find anything.

Obviously not a big deal. Really more of a curiosity and annoyance. I was surprised I couldn’t find any existing posts. Maybe I’m just out of touch with best practices.

As you figured, it is /etc/xdg/autostart/qui-updates.desktop that triggers the Qubes Updates gui, you should delete / neutralize it if you want to stop the Gui updates to show up every boot.

the qui-updates.desktop starts only the widget, not the full update GUI. Maybe it was running at the last time you logged out with “save session” option enabled? Check “session and startup” settings in xfce.

Incredible. You were absolutely right. Of the options here, I thought that was the least likely since I tend to decline that option whenever I see it and had recently performed a clean install of 4.2. But you were right.

Just in case anyone else stumbles on this thread or for when I forget in a few months, I resolved the issue by clicking the

  • Qubes Applications menu bar icon
  • gear icon in the left navigation
  • System Settings option in the middle pane
  • Session and Startup in the right pane (as referenced)
  • Saved Sessions tab
  • Remove saved sessions button

Thanks!
