Based on my observation of the ongoing developments, considerable work is going on to support Wayland & KDE Plasma on dedicated sys-gui. Since XFCE support for Wayland is not yet finalized and GNOME support is out of question, the logical development environment for Wayland is KDE Plasma (Sway is not suitable for novice users).

I have to enable sys-gui with KDE Plasma if I want to properly observe the ongoing developments.

IDK the intricacies here, but it sounds like XFCE 4.20 has “experimental Wayland support for most components.” News – Xfce 4.20 released – Xfce That was back in December 2024. Perhaps it has solidified somewhat since then.

Based on discussions and feedback from some of the core developers, yes. They are optimist about XFCE.

It all revolves around wayland support. You can track GUI domain developments in this github project. Another thing to consider is that setup with dedicated sys-gui may or may not have GUI in dom0, but I’m not sure about this.
