Performance impact of Template-VMs on a slow disk?

I’m running out of space on my SSD and debating whether I should move my App-VMs or their templates to my secondary HDD. Are template VMs loaded into RAM when an associated App-VM is started? Or, more generally, would a Template-VM on a slow disk impact the performance of an App-VM based on that Template-VM on a fast one? Or is it the other way around, would storing the App-VM on the HDD and the template on the SSD make more sense? Which setup would be better, performance-wise?
