I’m on 4.1.2 (r4.1) with Debian 11 and I need to upgrade Qubes.
For context, starting out with Qubes, I created and used a stand alone VM, but, with the upgrade want to use Qubes the way it is supposed to be used.
For additional context. I don’t trust myself to install VPN software, Cisco Anyconnect and Open Connect, following the VPN how-to that includes creating a net vm, yes to any vm can use this VM, etc.
I’ll probably install them into my Dev VM.
I have a one off PDF reader/writer application. Should I create a VM then install the one off software into that? Or do I install the software into the template?
I guess the same would apply to Microsoft VS Code. In the form of a question, Should install it into my “Dev” Qube? Or into the Template?
VS Code is installed in the Qube and not the Template. The upgrade notification works. The current OS Debian 11 with the latest Qube version coming soon.
Frankly, I didn’t do anything.

" if you want to install “vim”, you do it in the template and then all AppVM using Debian 13 Template VM will have “vim” installed (after a reboot after the change). Note that is also work for emacs
With this mechanism, it is easy to switch an AppVM from a Linux distribution to another, just switch the qube template to use Fedora instead of Debian, reboot, done. This is also useful when switching to a new major release of the distribution in the template: Debian 13 is bugged? Let’s switch back to Debian 12 until it is fixed and continue working (do not forget writing a bug report to Debian). "
