When I right click on the desktop and then click on Applications, there are no thumbnails next to any of the System Tools and Qubes Tools as well as under any AppVMs or templates that are listed. I had debian-12-xfce set as the default in the installer and did not install fedora-40-xfce. Maybe that had something to do with it?
Is it a new Qubes OS installation?
It shouldn’t be related to your templates.
Probably some of your custom changes in dom0 configs are to blame.
It was a brand new installation. Last time I checked, the issue appears to have solved itself. I will check again if that is the case.
You mean icons by “thumbnails”?
I do not have them either, I think we lost them in the 4.1 → 4.2 process as they used to be displayed a while ago.
I have them, so this cannot be right, unless you mean in an in place upgrade
from 4.1 to 4.2. But that cant account for @anon39129773’s experience which in
any case seems to have resolved itself.
I never presume to speak for the Qubes team.

Yes.
nope, issue is still here. Just checked.
I had a similar issue with the icons in the domains widget and updater GUI missing, until I realized they were in seemingly non-qubes packages. Maybe it’s a similar problem here, that the package that provided these icons got deleted in the in-place upgrade?
In my case, this is happening on a clean install. The issue sometimes resolves itself then happens again so I don’t think the package is missing either?
OK - I was going on what you said earlier about it appearing to have
solved itself.
It doesn’t have anything to do with selecting Debian at install.

OK, so sometimes you see the icons, and sometimes you do not.
Thats, um, interesting.
