While installing 4.2, I noticed that there is now an option to set a root password (though I didn’t enable it). Does this option remove passwordless root? If so, is this now considered stable on 4.2?

No it’s just an upstream Fedora installer change, affecting only dom0 in a Qubes OS context but not VMs.
