Reading forum posts I’m just wondering if buying a refurbished Lenovo t480s is going to need the BIOS updated either before or after Qubes install? Or will the initial device set up / Qubes 4.1.2 take care of this?

If you need to update the firmware, you can use iso image from Lenove. It can be converted to img, and booted from USB, which allows you to update the firmware without relying on support from the OS.
