Would Like Help installing Latest Stable Version of Qubes onto my Laptop as the Main OS. System is a Fully Reset please walkthrough main issue is Stuck in Black Boot Screen

Hi Delia - and welcome to Qubes OS

Can you share how far you get? – with the description “Stuck in Black Boot Screen”, it’s tempting to reply something along the lines of “is the machine/power on?”

One thing that could give more debug, is to edit the GRUB menu and remove the quiet from the kernel line … and maybe test with both the default kernel and the kernel latest.

[Edit: I don’t have the same hardware, so I can’t test myself … :-/]

This is how far I get before it gets Stuck.

Is it when you install, or after an install that looks successful?

When installing

Qubes ISO on USB Drive
Boot from USB
Selected Install
Then Stuck on that Screen

Can anyone help or explain how to fix this

Looks like your hardware is not supported. You could try the release candidate of Qubes os 4.2.4 to see if it helps Download Qubes OS | Qubes OS

Your computer does not look like it is handled by Qubes OS.

Hi Delia

Can you take a look in the BIOS? – does the storage stay something about RAID or Intel VMD?

If it does, can you disable it?

RAID On? This one?

Yes - if the BIOS has a “RAID: On” somewhere, then it’s worth to try and change it to “Off” and see if it affects the possibility to install Qubes OS on the machine.

Same Error Didn’t work

Try 4.2.2

I believe the kernel has issues with Nvidia cards and I’m not sure what kernel 4.2.3 has

https://mirrors.edge.kernel.org/qubes/iso/

Any other solution if this doesn’t work

You should figure out if your laptop just doesn’t support qubes or if the kernel issue is the cause. If it is the latter then installing with 4.2.2 iso will allow you to install

Depending on your tech knowledge, you can edit grub options to troubleshoot

To fix, please install 4.2.0-RC4 then perform a full upgrade and on reset make sure that you have set it to use the latest kernel installed.

Another way is to install 4.2.0-RC4 and make sure that the latest kernel is installed, 6.6.68-1
After that, feel free to do a full install of the latest Qubes.
Do not format /boot partition though. When you boot up into the latest version edit the command line and check the kernel it’s using. If it’s the earlier version, update the command to use that kernel and init script and all, then execute to start the system.

After that, edit the grub config and set it to use that kernel always.

This resolves the issue. (At least it worked for me when I was looking for methodology to use)

Device Info:
DELL XPS 15 9530
CPU: Intel 19-13900H
GPU: Intel Iris Xe
dGPU: NVIVIA GeForce RTX 4070
RAM: 32G x64 bit
Current OS: Windows 11 Pro

Greeting I hope someone can create a working detailed step by step Installation Guide of Qubes OS for the following device that is shown above. This is a Laptop that has been reset so nothing is on it beside the Basic Stuff that comes with it. I can’t disable the dGPU.

Did you check the documentation? Installation guide | Qubes OS
