I can’t seem to get Qubes 4.2.3 installed on a ThinkPad X1. I’d provide an error message but the installation has failed or gotten hung-up at all random points of the install. I’ve attempted to install about 6 times. I verified the iso before creating the bootable usb. And also verified the usb using the ‘Verify media’ button found in the GUI portion of the installer and it succeeds. But when I try to use the ‘check media’ option of the non-GUI portion of the installer, it fails every time. I’ve used the same usb drive and computer to install ubuntu (5 times), kicksecure (1 time), and mint (1 time), in the same few days, all of which have installed without issue. Any guidance would be appreciated!
I have a t470 from the same gen of Intel CPU. No issues. I take it that the install fails with an error message during the install ? Does it not repeat the fail at the same point of install ? Can you roughly summarize what it says ?
Generally I always wipe the laptop drive before starting install, old remnant data can confuse the installer.
If it fails in the first minute of install, it is usually partitioning drive related (my above point)
You could try the previous iso to 4.2.3 but I’d only do that if you are sure there’s something wrong with iso. I don’t usually test the media (rarely had an issue) and the test will fail if you don’t write the iso with DD or similar
I always choose to reformat the drive and have the installer create whatever partitions it needs to. The first error message was before entering the GUI portion of the installer. I searched the web, didn’t find anything related, and tried to install again. The next time I got past the installation config (pressed the ‘install’ button) and it froze at a point saying it was downloading something. It never ended up making changes to the drive. The next time it got far enough to make changes to the drive and then froze again. Then the next time I got a random error before making it to the GUI installer. The time after that froze again during install.
How did you write the iso to USB ? DD ? Rufus ?
On the rare occasion I have installer issues, it always fails at the same point
I have to agree with @corny on this one.
If it fails unpredictably and at different times, that usually suggests a hardware failure. Maybe it’s worth checking the integrity of your hardware components.
Can you tell us anything at all about them? Even random words you remember that were on the screen?
Where is this button that you’re referring to? There is a GRUB boot option the involves a media test, but as far as I remember, the version of the Anaconda installer used by Qubes OS doesn’t have a button like this.
