It has been almost 1 year ago since i upgraded a template, and i have completely forgot. From what i see fedora 40 template approaches EOL in may 23 2025. How can i know when i have to update templates and how can i do them?
You actually get a update sign (in info bar) whenever Qubes recongnises a new update for any of it’s templates. If you click on it, it should open a drop down menu, where you can start the update functions in a window.
All templates are shown there in a list and for templates, which should be updated, their checkboxes already are checked, so you simply can start the entire update.
So when fedora 40 reaches EOL it is automatically going to tell me that i should update to 41? Do i update in the qubes template manager?
The following article will give you all the information you need:
beside DVM’s solution, you always should check, when new template versions around. This could be done with the following command in dom0 terminal:
sudo qvm-template list --available
Updating a template (keeping a Fedora XX release up to date) is supported natively by Qubes OS, and all integrated into the UI.
Upgrading a template (moving from Fedora XX to XX+1) is not supported by Qubes OS UI. It is actually possible, but it’s not guaranteed it will work fine. The easiest path is to install Fedora XX+1 template and reconfigure your qubes to use it. That’s where some automation to configure your templates (or at least, keeping a text file with changes you made into templates) is valuable, because you will have to replicate all the changes.
