How do you decide on the color coding for qubes?

Initially, I separated the colors of the qubes to make them less confusing, but as the number of qubes increased, I started using the same colors more often.

Therefore, I decided to categorize them based on safety, but I’m struggling with the criteria for colors other than black and red, as they are vague.

How do you set the colors for your qubes?

The way it’s described in the docs is something like: (scale)
Red - Ultimately Untrusted
Orange
Yellow
Green - Trusted
Blue
Purple
Black - Ultimately Trusted

However, I use the US classified documents standard, which is:
Yellow: Top Secret/SCI
Orange: Top Secret
Red: Secret
Blue: Confidential
Purple: Controlled Unclassified Information
Green: Unclassified
--
Black: system stuff, like templates. (not part of regular coloring)

I just do it this way because it makes sense for me, but you can do it your own way. The general idea, which you can also take or leave, is to color based on the trust level or sensitivity of your qube.

I use only these:

  • black: offline with no external files, nothing special
  • blue: see below
  • yellow: default level when online
  • orange: see below
  • red: see below

Then I use a level behind if any of these things happens:

  • the qube is interacting with other qubes, especially if receiving data, files
  • the qube uses some applications not installed with the default distribution repos (depending on the method, it could immediately decrease the level to red)
  • the qube downloads things on the web
  • the qube is connected to some peripheral (i.e. a phone)

Bonus: Programming approaches to Alternative Appmenu icon effects, Setting default workspace per qube, Additional label colors
