How are gpu resources handeled in an appvm

If I wanted to play a native linux game in a linux appvm would the gpu be utilized by that appvm? Or must I use pci pass-through like you would for a Windows VM?

AppVMs do not have access to the GPU in Qubes, all rendering is software
based. You would have to passthrough.
