I was browsing the forums to find out how to create an up-to-date template for kali and found this page.
Does this mean that I can download and install this and create a template without difficulty?
Unman seems to be a QubesOS developer, so it seems safe to use. How come it is not official?
Because making a template official creates a large burden on the project in terms of time, workforce, and other resources, all of which are already scarce.
I build templates as needed, and make them available to the community.
Sometimes these are built from the Qubes builder but are not yet
available in official repositories - e.g some minimal templates,
bookworm.
Sometimes they are templates that will never be in official
repositories - Ubuntu templates.
Sometimes they are templates that are in the community repo but are
outdated there, or I prefer some other flavor - e.g kali
I also build templates that are outwith Qubes builder - usually new
flavors - blackarch, kali, parrot, mint.
I provide source for these builds, but they will never be included in
the main Qubes builder.
I’ve posted elsewhere in the Forum about how you go about building a
new flavor - it’s relatively straightforward. Building a new template
is more work, which is what I am laboring on at the moment.
These templates are provided as is, and are provided at users’ own risk.
They are signed with my signing key, so you can confirm that - it is
up to individual to decide where to place their trust.
As I build off Qubes source, any issues should be reported as they may
reflect problems with the base templates. In the first instance issues
should be reported here or in qubes-users.
I never presume to speak for the Qubes team.
When I comment in the Forum or in the mailing lists I speak for myself.
No - qvm-template is coded to official and community repositories, set
in /etc/qubes/repo-templates.
You can add unofficial sources there, but I do not promote that
approach.
Yes. If you have any issues, please ask.
