Has anyone had success making a Windows 11 qube?

I set up a Windows 11 standalone qube with 16gb memory and a 200gb root drive. I started the VM with the Windows 11 iso and followed the instructions detailed here. I selected the 200gb root drive for the install. After following the steps to add the BypassTPMCheck, BypassSecureBootCheck, and BypassRAMCheck registry values the installer continues with the install. It says that the system may restart during the install but when it shuts down and I restart I boot into SeaBIOS and get this error message:

An operating system wasn’t found. Try disconnecting any drives that don’t contain an operating system. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart.

Has anyone gotten past this? Reading the docs it seems like installing Windows 11 is supported just fine. Is this because Windows 11 is installed in the 200gb root drive and qubes expects the bootloader on one of the other drives? I tried installing Windows 10 and it works fine. I also followed the instructions here to add “split_lock_detect=off” to dom0 kernel options.

use qwt-ng and qvm-create-windows-qube. it does all the job for you.

Hi excitts!

I installed a Window11 standalone qube recently. I comfortably reading books on Kindle within that qube. I am writing records of installation and continue to do so after I reinstall Qubes OS and then Windows11 standalone qube. This is my answer to “has anyone had success making a Windows 11 qube?”.

On the other hand, I am a little curious about how you got in 'SeaBios".

  • Interpretation according to the User’s Manual, which mentions the need of restarting windows11 qube (to be) many times from Qube Manager.
    • Windows11 qube (to be) shutdown itself.
    • You restarted the qube in Qubes OS continuing to work. (Using Qube Manager)
    • The qube is lead to SeaBIOS.
  • Interpretation by “system may restart during installation”.
    • Windows11 qube (to be) shutdown itself.
    • Qubes OS shutdown.
    • You restarted the PC.
    • The PC automatically went to SeaBIOS.
  • Interpretation after my successful installation. I knew windows11 qube (to be) does not shutdown Qubes OS. I experienced “operating system not found” in the process of installation of Qubes OS. That message appeared when I booted the PC.
    • Windows11 qube (to be) shutdown itself.
    • You shutdown Qubes OS.
    • You restarted the PC.
    • The PC automatically went to SeaBIOS.

I note that I downloaded ISO-image because preinstalled Windows11 had a problem in updating. (Probably, I skipped update too long.)

Has anyone had success making a Windows 11 qube?

Yes. Following the official docs, I created a W11 template and AppVMs.
What I learned the hard way: Do NOT install the GUI stuff of QWT.

why? :)) it is almost stable now. got a feature freeze and working on quality issues.

I am talking about the official QWT in the context of the official docs.

stock qwt is non-functional with modern Windows for years.

Well, I use it successfully with both W7 and W11 (without installing the GUI component).

It seems to be broken

What version did you install? Maybe this is because I am trying to install Windows 11 IoT Enterprise. Was there anything special you did?

Hi excitts,

I think installed Windows (multi-edition ISO for x64 devices).

I downloaded from https://www.microsoft.com/ja-jp/software-download/windows11 and I used the OEM license of the PC. (The bundled OS was Windows Home Edition).

Got it. The windows 11 installer needs at least 24gb of memory. Can be lowered after install completes.
