GUI freezes, but I can still use the ctrl-alt-f2 console

If the GUI freezes (I can’t click on anything or type anything in any open window), but I can still use the ctrl-alt-f2 console to login and look at logs, etc., what can I do?

I see no error logs from “journalctl -x -p 3 -r” that look relevant from the time of the gui freeze. Is there some sort of command I could run to find out what the gui is currently doing while frozen? Surely there must be crash information somewhere.

I’ve found that if I leave the machine on the ctrl-alt-f2 console, it never freezes. It only freezes if I leave the gui open.

Have you tried installing xorg-x11-drv-amdgpu.x86_64 and changing the driver in xorg.conf to amdgpu?

The default driver is modesetting, and it would randomly crash on my system running Ryzen 9 / X670e

Is there a guide on how to do that? I’ve found lots of references to needing to do something like this, but am unable to find the appropriate way to do this in dom0.

This was solved by updating the Xorg config to use AMD described in:
