Initially I was excited to switch over all my app VMs to gentoo-minimal. After I did my first migration and saw my AppVM disk usage skyrocket from a few hundred MB for the debian template to 6GB+ for the gentoo-minimal I am rethinking the decision.
Your AppVM size should be the same whatever the template
