Does Qubes support i7-4700MQ / 4712MQ?

I’m using a T440p installed with an i7-4800MQ CPU but I find it gets too hot so I’m considering a downgrade.

Someone told me Qubes can only support a T440p with a i7-4800MQ upwards so I thought I’d chase that up here.

Can it support an i7-4700MQ or even an i7-4712MQ?

It rather sounds like you need to replace the cooling gel on the heat sink or the heat sink itself…

Qubes OS supports all x64 CPUs Linux supports, but has additional requirements like IOMMU and possibly EPT. Check the Intel page of your CPU about that.

Well, I am using an 00HM903 cooler (the one covers the CPU and GPU) in a CPU-only model of the T440p along with some Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut.

I am looking to improve my heatsink by adding more heat pipes as well as use Honeywell’s PTM7950 padding.

Well, I’ve done my research and compared the i7-4712MQ with the i7-4800MQ. Clock speed aside, they are mostly identical but a couple of things that the former lacks which the latter does have are…

  • Intel vPro® Eligibility

  • Intel® Trusted Execution Technology

  • Intel® Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O (VT-d)

So does this mean Qubes won’t run on a i7-4712MQ?

Correct. The hardware requirements for Qubes OS is:

Since the i7-4712MQ does not support Intel VT-d, you cannot use it for Qubes OS.
