Does KDE works with 4.3 rc2?

Sup folks !
Tried to install KDE on 4.3 rc2 but it doesn’t let me pass the login screen after the reboot

I used the qubes-dom0-update kde-settings-qubes
Updated the /etc/sddm.conf and switched to sddm instead of lightdm

I have the same on another machine with 4.2.4 and all works
Bug ???

The answer is yes. KDE works with r4.3 rc2 and there are automated tests performed to confirm it works properly.

You may see screenshots here:

Or watch video of it running here:

More information is needed to troubleshoot. Maybe you could look at journal logs and see if there is any errors.

It’s a bug !

The journal doesn’t output anything related as I could tell but I found a solution and another minor issue

So apparently using two+ displays besides the laptop is an issue now when logging in. I had to disconnect my displays and only then I could successfully log in
Please fix that

Also regardless if I use plasma or not, when I click network manager → available connection → my wifi
It takes over 10 sec to pop up the password prompt

I don’t have github acc to report the issues though
Hopefully these will be fixed in the final release !

Awesome!
Any intentions to bring KDE back as officially supported or even main option?

  • KDE is lightweight and not bloatwared as it looked before.
  • It can manage windows properly (remember their positions and do other cool stuff), making it a way better fit for Qubes OS with colored windows.
  • It is way better supported and developed than XFCE.
  • It looks way better, (especially to new users) compared to outdated (one may say ugly) view of XFCE.

I can not talk officially on behalf of Qubes OS team as I am not a member of the core team. Just a regular user like most other forum members.

Having said that, based on the feedback, follow-ups and technical discussions, since Wayland transition is necessary and XFCE lack of full Wayland support (at this moment), KDE would be the most probable candidate.

Please don’t. I got accustomed to XFCE. Also, my personal opinion,
I’ve always found KDE’s start menu style ugly.

Is your template up-to-date?

Yes they are up to date

@alimirjamali Curios, why is wayland necessary? We do have Xlibre actively developing at this point. What are your thoughts on Qubes using that one instead of Wayland? Thanks, much appreciated…

There are some reasons Wayland is necessary. Some are out of necessity. Some are from security perspective.

  1. Fedora which is currently the default Distro for dom0 (and GUIVM) is going to ditch X11 in its forthcoming releases. And the provided DEs will only support Wayland or even might be ditched (in the case of XFCE if it does not make it to support Wayland). And Fedora devs have rejected Xlibre (details here). Switching the entire dom0 Distro is more costly and complex than migration to Wayland.
  2. Similarly, major DEs are planning to drop X11 support in their future releases (not just DEs provided by Fedora but the upstream). KDE is an example (details here).
  3. The current path for adding 3D acceleration to individual qubes is tied with Wayland.
  4. There are multiple bugs with the existing X11 GUI daemon/agent implementation in Qubes OS. And due to extreme complexity of Xlib, many patches are needed in multiple places and per DE.

Icons are grayscale even for Qube Manager
BTW I’m getting the
“An error occurred: We appreciate your enthusiasm! That said, for the safety of our community, you’ve reached the maximum number of topics a new user can create on their first day. Please wait 39 minutes and you’ll be able to create more new topics.”

There are many issues with KDE in 4.2 rc2… do you even care if I post these bugs or should I just let it go and see the final version of 4.3?

Many icons are in grayscale mode: systray, even the top bar icons of Qubes Manager !

This was a deliberate change. This happened after a recent collaboration between Qubes OS and a professional design team. You may find deep background on the change here.

I personally like the new (flat grayscale) icons.

More information here.

This is how the Discourse (software used for the Qubes OS forum) works. It has an algorithm on the number of posts/replies a user could submit. The more you engage with the forum (in a positive way), the more it allows you to post. More information here.

I am personally not a part of Qubes OS core development team. But I contribute to the project. And I try to convey feedback from forum users to the core team. But if you want to report an issue or submit a request directly to the core team members, the way to do it is via Qubes OS Github issues repository. More information here.

NO !
The look when you use white theme in XFCE is not the same as using dark theme on KDE ! The icons don’t have any normal appearance and have no indications they can be even clicked !

Yeah ok. I’m just gonna cut it
Thank you though

KDE the best
