"DO NOT USE" Monitor

I have this external monitor which is labeled “DO NOT USE” in Display settings. Why Qubes doesn’t want me to use it, is it because it’s connected to USB-C port?

Hi @ryuuv, welcome to the forum!

Any chance of getting a screenshot of the “DO NOT USE”? Do you mean that the name of the display is “DO NOT USE”, or do you get an alert or something?

If it’s the first one, then it’s possible that the EDID of the hardware is actually reporting itself as “DO NOT USE”, which means that you might have a monitor with “custom” firmware on it, or the USB-C port/controller/bus itself is reporting this back to your motherboard.

Either way, this is intriguing, and I’d be interested to know a little more about your hardware, namely:

  • Does this happen when you plug a different monitor into the USB-C port?
  • Does this happen when you plug that external monitor into the HDMI port (if there is one)?
  • Does this happen on other OSes (Windows does not count. They have janky workarounds built-in that hide this sort of stuff from the end user…)?

Hi and thanks for your answer @alzer89!

On different PC running linux the name of the monitor in Display settings is just Brand Inc. 69" on Qubes it changes to DO NOT USE - Brand Inc. 69". Same thing when using Mini HDMI - HDMI Cable (it’s a portable monitor). It happens only with this particular monitor.

What is the output of the following command in dom0:

xrandr --verbose

This will output the maximum detail about what the machine can see about the display(s) connected.

Thanks, that’s a cool command. I will analyze the output and compare it to a display that doesn’t have this “DO NOT USE” added to the name. Is there anything particular I should look for? Should I actually be concerned and stop using it, because it works alright actually?
