Default install fails on vanilla old install

Trying to install 4.3 from scratch via USB stick on t480 that had only a vanilla 4.2 install completely fails because it says it can’t format the disk (??) and erase/reclaim all old partitions - “error checking disk”, see other messages here with same issue.

Selecting “latest kernel” at grub fixes but why is this even needed? Out of the box with default path you can’t install over the prior version??

Forum search finds exactly one post here containing the quoted string “error checking disk”, including yours. Which other messages?

I installed a fresh copy of 4.3 on my ThinkPad T480 with an 8th Gen Core i5 today; 4.2 was already installed. It installed fine and is working fine, not a single issue.

However, I experienced the same issue with another T480 a while back. After some searching, I found that the problem was with the M.2 2242 WWAN slot, which is the secondary storage slot. Many users have reported similar issues with different operating systems. I then switched to the primary slot, which only supports 2.5-inch drives, and the issue was resolved.

I didn’t check at the time whether changing the kernel would fix it. You might have an entirely different issue from mine.

I have seen this behavior when trying to reinstall over a failed
install. I have not seen it when running an upgrade install.
I have always assumed it is a deficiency in the Fedora installer. Hard to
see how kernel version could affect that, but apparently it does.
