Sometime after upgrading to 4.3, on the Fedora 43 template, Brave started crashing tabs with a SIGKILL motive or straight away crash the entire browser. The most repeated crash is when loading a GitHub page or interacting with other tabs while on a video call.
I’m monitoring CPU and RAM usage for dom0. Without fail, every time there’s a crash it comes preceded by a big spike in RAM and CPU usage in dom0.
My laptop is a Thinkpad X1 Gen 9 with Intel i7 11th Gen and 32GB RAM.
As suggested in this post I set the offending qube’s (work cube, btw) memory to 10gb and opted out of memory balancing. It has 4 vcpus. None of this has made a difference. I also turned off GPU acceleration in Brave to the extent that it is possible.
Does anyone have any insight on how to address this or why would this be happening? I do not want to use Firefox, especially given their latest developments, but this is outside of this question.
Slack also crashes although way less often than Brave.
I have been using Qubes OS for almost a year and I absolutely love what it provides. I really do not want to switch away from it. Hopefully someone can help me fix this, because it’s becoming so much of a deal breaker that I’m considering dropping Qubes OS because of it
Thanks! I also do that through htop when I’m noticing the browser freezes and a spike in dom0’s RAM. The RAM indicator for the offending qube is never high. In fact, it is rarely above 4-5GB during regular use, so I would assume that visiting a GitHub page (the most common crash cause) wouldn’t occupy the remaining 5GB until the maximum of 10GB is reached even if just for one second, no?
Thanks again! I just got the browser to crash by reloading a previously crashed (with SIGKILL error) GitHub tab. This time it didn’t spike dom0’s RAM or CPU usage, but the entire browser crashed right away.
The log is huge, so I’m attaching below in a toggable way. This response was too big to fit into one comment, so I’m attaching part of the logs in the next one!
I include from what I assume is the beginning of the crash to the last output journalctl -f gave. At the end of the log there is also some tailscaled output, which I left since I don’t really understand what this means or if it can have anything to do with the crash (tho I doubt). Hopefully there isn’t any PPI in this log!
Let me know if I can provide anything else
`sudo journalctl -f` output
