"All Qubes VMs fail after install - no USB input working"

Hello Quobes Support,

I recently installed Qubes OS on my Dell Optiplex 3080. The installation completed successfully, but after the first boot, all of the system VMs (including sys-usb, sys-net, and others) failed to start.

As a result, I am stuck at the login screen and cannot use my keyboard or mouse at all. I did not change any settings after installation. Everything is broken right from the start.

I suspect the issue may be due to not being connected to the internet during the installation process, which might have prevented some drivers (especially USB and networking) from being downloaded or installed.

Here’s a quick summary of the issue:

  • Qubes OS version: [insert version, e.g., 4.2.1]
  • System: Dell Optiplex 3080
  • sys-usb, sys-net, and other VMs do not start
  • Mouse and keyboard (USB) do not work
  • I cannot access dom0 or any terminal due to lack of input devices
  • I was not connected to the internet during installation

Is there any way to fix this without reinstalling? If not, are there any steps I should take during reinstallation to avoid this problem again?

Thank you for your support.

The latest supported Qubes OS version is 4.2.4:

The Qubes OS installation does not require Internet access, however, any hardware requiring proprietary drivers/firmware, particularily troublesome Wi-Fi network cards, may not be detected nor work out-of-the-box.
