8 GB + 8 GB + 8 GB + 8 GB or 8 GB + 8 GB + 8 GB + 16 GB?

I have a PC with 8 GB + 8 GB + 8 GB of RAM. It has been sufficient for both Windows and Linux, but I believe that upgrading to 32 GB of RAM would enhance my overall experience. I have two options: I can purchase an additional 8 GB RAM module, which would give me a total of 32 GB (8 GB + 8 GB + 8 GB + 8 GB), or I can buy a 16 GB RAM module, resulting in a configuration of 8 GB + 8 GB + 8 GB + 16 GB. What do you recommend for Qubes OS?

The memory will sum up to the total of memory modules.

However, for maximum performance, depending on the mainboard, memory should be identical by pair / three slots / four slots (4 channel is for high end systems).

Mixing memory will work, but will give poor performance compared to having identical memory modules by 2/3/4 pairs. This will allow more memory though.

In addition to what Solene mentions, try to find out the speed and part number of the installed modules. You could install dmidecode in dom0 and run sudo dmidecode --type 17 | less to get this information. It would be a good idea to get an identical part.

Go with 32GB for maximum performance especially if you have lots of qubes to open. Good luck! :+1:
